Think pastries. Think French. Think PAUL. What started in 1889 in the French city of Lille, has become a food, dessert, pastry, and hot chocolate heaven up to this day.
PAUL was recently launched in Johannesburg, with the only store located along the cobblestone streets of Melrose Arch. It has instantly become a nationwide craze, and probably the most visited cafe in Johannesburg since its opening. My family and I visited on a Sunday morning, and the restaurant was almost filled to capacity at 10am.
PAUL has an extensive menu, ranging from croissants with scrambled eggs to authentic cream-filled eclairs.
I opted for a traditional Eggs Benedict, which was served on a fresh, toasted English muffin and a side of potato wedges. Caffeine in the morning is a must! And PAUL’s americano did the trick.
My meal was exactly what an Eggs Benedict should be! It was breakfast dishes all round for us, and we were deeply satisfied with the quality, taste and presentation.
I did visit the cafe at Dubai International in April 2017, and sampled their trademark almond croissant! Perfection! Flaky, buttery, and filled with almond paste! I would highly recommend this particular pastry, and if you feel that I’ve led you astray, please do let me know! 😉
If you’re a foodie like myself, PAUL is definitely worth a visit, but be sure to get there early, especially if it’s a weekend visit. Although, waiting in line with a free sample of their signature hot chocolate doesn’t sound too bad!
